Jen: Fiddle player, backing vocalist, composer of modest fiddle parts! I currently live in Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, having relocated from London's Kentish Town in 1999. I have been playing the violin since I was 6 years old. My background is principally classical, playing with the Tees-side schools orchestra in Cleveland in the late 80's. I attained violin grade 7 with merit in 1988. For the past thirteen years I have been involved in various small bands playing predominantly contemporary Christian music. |

Steff and String offered me the opportunity to join Firedaze in 2004. Adapting my technique to that of roots fiddle has been an exciting, sometimes challenging, but extremely rewarding process. As the metamorphosis continues I plan to draw on Trad Irish tunes to enhance my fiddling style over the next year. To play regularly so closely with two talented musicians, bouncing off each other musically and writing new music together, is a thing that lifts the soul - never has my fiddle sung like it does these days!

Fiddle My violin was made in Germany in the mid to late 1800's. It required some renovation in the 80's, entrusting it to the loving attention of Milner and Hallows violin makers (now Alan Milner) in Richmond, North Yorkshire. It features a lion head scroll and mother-of-pearl in-lay flower pattern on the tailpiece. Currently I am playing on Thomastik Dominant strings. They are nice and bright and respond quickly enough to give clarity to rapid folky-fiddle work. I use a Fishman piezoelectric pickup mounted in the bridge, it does need boosting with an EQ when we are live, in order to maintain the bass tones and the rich sound of the instrument. |
